In recent times, we have seen a lot of biggies releasing on the same day and problems arising as a result. Both the films demand the most number of screens and try to outsmart the other, resulting in controversies and mudslinging from both the sides. Recently, Dilwale-Bajirao Mastani, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil–Shivaay and Raees–Kaabil clashed and it led to major issues over screen sharing. Even Golmaal Again and Secret Superstar clash on Diwali this year gave the former headache despite the latter being a very small film.
Now, one more clash is going to happen – the Akshay Kumar starrer PadMan and Neeraj Pandey’s Aiyaary starring Sidharth Malhotra and Manoj Bajpayee on Republic Day 2018. At the launch of PVR Icon in Mumbai, PadMan’s leading actor Akshay Kumar was asked to comment on this clash. The actor gave a very interesting reply and he objected to the use of the word ‘clash’. He said, “Both PadMan and Aiyaary are absolutely different. Neeraj Pandey is a very dear friend of mine. It’s only the media that calls simultaneous release of two films as ‘clash’! Kuch aisa nahin hai, bhaisaab! India has 4500-5000 screens. My film will release in just 2800-2900 screens. Aiyaary meanwhile will release in around 1600-1700 screens. Hence, there are enough reasons. Then how can one call it a clash? Aiyaary is different and Friday Filmworks (producers of Aiyaary) is like my company! So there’s no problem at all.”
PadMan is inspired from the life of Arunachalam Muruganantham, who made low-cost sanitary napkins. It also stars Radhika Apte and Sonam Kapoor and is directed by R Balki. Twinkle Khanna makes her debut as a producer with this film.+
